DID YOU KNOW?

The biggest weapon we have against the now notorious SARS, is NOT surgical masks, quarantines, or another new vaccine. The best protection from SARS is simpler than that: it is a HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM. While this truly is a simple answer, it is not easy for a lot of people, because it takes more than good supplements. It also involves reducing processed food consumption, especially refined sugars. The good news is that when you detoxify and nourish your immune system, you can solve many other health “puzzles” besides SARS.

SARS is a virus related to the common cold. It stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. According to a recent article in The Washington Post, “experts say they believe SARS is transmitted most easily through close human contact, often from sneezing or coughing. But some laboratory analysis and several cases suggest it may survive on surfaces for several hours, making it possible to spread the germ simply by touching objects.” Here is where we need to reiterate over and over – the objective is not how clean, sterile or “disinfected” we can keep every counter, doorknob or environment AROUND US. The true solution is maintaining a clean, non-toxic, alkaline environment INSIDE US, because the true danger is having a toxic, anaerobic, acidic bio-terrain (the environment inside your body). Many times our attempts to “disinfect” our homes and workplaces actually make our blood and bio-terrain “dirtier” – full of chemicals and other toxins that depress our immune systems and mess up our hormones. That is why safe cleaning products like Heartland’s All-Purpose Solution and non-toxic lice solutions like Heartland’s Lice Arrest are so important. These products are especially significant for young children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to chemicals because of body size or age. The key is to remember that any virus, including SARS, cannot physiologically survive in a clean, aerobic, alkaline bio-environment. You may not have any control of international politics or “scary” plagues, but you DO have control over your body’s environment.

Current news tends to focus on the negative, scary angles of the SARS story as it unfolds. Instead of focusing on the fear factor, the percentage of deaths, or the international threat, why not hone in on something positive? Common sense dictates that a strong immune system is a big positive when confronting SARS, which, epidemiologically speaking, is just a cold. Certainly it isn’t an ordinary cold, but like any other threatening dis-ease, your self-healing body only has a fighting chance if you give it the right weapons. Knowledge is another big positive. What do you know about fighting colds? What do you know about your own immune system, and how to make it stronger?

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

Do you know if you have a strong immune system? Is it possible to build a responsive immune system quickly, if this is your weakness? Because your body is fearfully and wonderfully made, it will gladly put to use immediately every good thing you give it. Thank God that your blood is not lazy and does not procrastinate! Everything you do for your immune system today COUNTS. You may never be exposed to SARS, but can always benefit from a stronger immune system. All you need to do is two things: lower your deficiencies, which helps BUILD your immune system, and lower your toxicity, which helps PROTECT your immune system.

BUILD your immune system and fight free radicals by consuming more anti-oxidants:

* Top anti-oxidant vitamins: vitamin E, vitamin C, beta carotene, CoQ10
* Top anti-oxidant minerals: selenium, magnesium and zinc
* Top anti-oxidant spices: oregano, thyme, sage, cumin, rosemary, saffron, turmeric, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom, coriander (cilantro), basil and tarragon

PROTECT your immune system by decreasing exposure to known immune-depressors and free radical instigators:

* Top immune depressors: White sugar, negative thoughts/out of control fear, and xenoestrogens (pesticides, petro-chemicals, strong household chemicals, synthetic air fresheners & fragrances)
* Top free radical instigators: fried foods, high stress, pollution/xenoestrogens

When your toxicity (exposure to all kinds of “poisons”) is too high AND your deficiencies (lack of essentials, like sleep, water, omega-3/essential fatty acids, adequate vitamins, minerals and enzymes) are too high, that is when your system is most vulnerable. Lowering toxicity and lowering deficiencies helps protect your body from all kinds of “dis-ease”, including colds, flu, and SARS. Building your immune system with anti-oxidants and power-packed foods while protecting your immune system from the most menacing toxins, especially xenoestrogens, is the most positive approach.

Finally, don’t forget the real positive effects of positive thoughts. Prayers and affirmations DIRECTLY effect the immune system at a bio-chemical level. Negative thoughts, on the other hand, directly effect your immune system in a negative way. Scientists can actually document the changes in chemistry of the immune receptors based on our disposition. They say “attitude is everything” and indeed, it almost is!

HEARTLAND NOTE:

Natural progesterone plays an important role in fighting xenoestrogen exposure, as it helps balance excess estrogen in the body. It is also an immune builder. When women are in their third trimester of pregnancy, their bodies produce up to 400mg of progesterone per day, giving the mother-to-be glowing skin, thicker hair, and peak immune system strength. That’s one reason why natural progesterone is called “The Great Protector”. For more information on Heartland’s Natural Progesterone Cream, click here www.heartlandnatural.com/progest.htm

IN THE NEWS

SARS AND YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM – What is the news saying?

April 24, 2003 – INQ7 News, Michael T. Lan: “The SARS virus is a mutated version of the cold virus, which infects millions of people each day. Patients will recover from viral diseases even without drugs. The key is to strengthen the patients' own immune systems.”

April 28, 2003 – Time Magazine: “AIDS and SARS (and the common cold, for that matter) are caused by viruses—and viruses are notoriously hard to kill. Although doctors have a huge arsenal of drugs and antibiotics capable of wiping out most bacterial infections, a viral invasion is a tougher proposition… A virus's worst enemy is the human immune system.”

April 7, 2003 – The Naturopathic Association of Canada: “The susceptibility and risk (of SARS) is based on two main factors: current health status of the immune system and minimizing fear and worry. People in a weakened immune state, older persons, or person currently dealing with other health concerns (e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems) are at the greatest risk. … Also, it is important to remember that fear and worry can adversely affect health and weaken the immune system.”

April 12, 2003 – Dr. Mercola: “The only solution for treating SARS is to proactively activate your immune system.”

EATING FOR HEALTH

Last newsletter we discussed the importance of zinc. Parallel to zinc is copper. If you are supplementing too much zinc, you may be copper deficient, and visa versa. That is why it is so important to use a multi-vitamin/mineral approach and to look for whole, quality foods for nutrients as opposed to taking things in isolation. One of the most interesting things about copper and zinc balance in the body is the issue of rage. The reason PMS and hormone imbalance is associated with rage is because estrogen dominance throws off our copper/zinc balance.

Copper deficiency can happen when megadosing on vitamin C or zinc. Too much copper, on the other hand, is not good, especially for people with cancer. Look for balance through good food choices and quality multi-vitamins, like Heartland’s Essential 90+ Spray Nutrition.

Interestingly enough, a lot of the foods that contain copper also contain zinc. Choosing to eat a wider variety of foods is one of the healthiest ways to get both adequate copper and zinc. Food in its original “packaging” – the way God made it.

A “RECIPE” FOR HEALTHY HAND WASHING

Along with other important recommendations for protecting yourself from SARS is the simple act of good hand washing. Notice that this technique from public health officials is NOT recommending that we use anti-bacterial soaps, but that we use good technique. Overuse of anti-bacterial soaps is actually creating more “super bugs” that don’t respond to anti-biotic treatments. SARS does not respond to anti-biotics.

Teach your family how to wash their hands with just plain soap, like Heartland’s All-Purpose Solution. Here’s the recipe:

Good Hand-washing Techniques

You need to wash your hands thoroughly. That means rubbing them together and making a soapy lather for at least 10 seconds before you rinse your hands. (Sing the alphabet song while you wash. This is a good timer.) Why? Because rubbing your hands with soapy water pulls the dirt and oily soils free from your skin. The soap lather holds both the dirt and germs inside bubbles where they can quickly be washed away.
