DID
YOU KNOW?
A healthy prostate gland has up to TEN TIMES the zinc of any other
organ in the body. It is essential to healthy prostate functioning and
critical to testosterone synthesis and sperm formation. Research published
in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry indicates that zinc helps prevent
the hormonal action that causes prostate enlargement. In addition to
helping reduce prostate enlargement in men, zinc has shown promise in
the treatment of male infertility.
Considered an essential trace element in the body, zinc is involved
in cell division and differentiation among many other biological functions.
This goes hand-in-hand with progesterone, which tells the cells to “slow-down,
differentiate, become what you are supposed to become” versus
EXCESS estrogen, which tells the cells to “hurry up, grow quickly”,
hindering normal cell development and contributing to cancer. The prostate
in the male fetus is created by the same cells that become the uterus
in the female baby. Just like a hormonal imbalance in the form of estrogen
dominance leads to uterine cancer, it is also a key factor in prostate
cancer. Excess estrogen comes from many sources: petrochemicals (pesticides,
plastics, commercial fragrances/air fresheners, solvents, candles, fabric
softeners, household cleaners), hormone-injected chicken, beef, milk,
eggs, foods with pesticides (especially coffee, beef, milk), and excess
body fat.
Zinc can be found in many good foods: seeds, nuts, whole grains, meat,
eggs, brown rice and berries. You can also get zinc in Heartland’s
Spray Nutrition products, especially in our Re-Live Again anti-aging
formula. In addition to prostate care, zinc is well known for its antibacterial
properties. It can even help kill organisms that contribute to urinary
tract infections. Besides fighting against infections and heavy metals,
zinc also helps repair wounds, maintain normal sexual function and protect
against deteriorating vision associated with age-related macular degeneration.
For the prostate to use zinc more efficiently, it is important to take
it in conjunction with pyridoxine (B6). Vitamin B6 also helps the prostate
as it inhibits prolactin, which can contribute to tumor formation in
men over age 40. B6 is found in whole-grain cereals, liver, poultry,
fish, meat, eggs, most vegetables, and sunflower seeds. Remember pesticide
and hormone-loaded chicken, meat and eggs also contribute greatly to
estrogen dominance, which hinders prostate health. Choose hormone-free
and organic products where possible.
Eliminating zinc deficiencies, along with balancing estrogen dominance
through normal physiological doses of natural progesterone, are both
important for more than 50% of men over age 40 dealing with prostate
enlargement and higher risks of prostate cancer. Heartland Natural Progesterone
Cream can be applied directly to genital areas, and users report success
for reduction of prostate inflammation. Consult your naturopath, chiropractor
or medical doctor knowledgeable in natural hormone balancing techniques.

KUTV, UTAH: HEALTHY LIVING with Shauna Lake
Jan 29, 2003 3:43 pm US/Mountain
Scientists still haven't found a cure for the common cold, but new
research may bring us closer to preventing colds in the first place.
A new study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics shows
products containing Zinc Glutonate Glycine might help. This national
study was conducted in Utah, at Provo's heritage school. 378 students
ages 12-18 were given a daily dose of an over the counter Zinc formula.
“The heritage study was great news. We want kids to be healthy
and to be in school,” said Linda Wolfe, RN, National Association
of School Nurses. The study found students who took a daily Zinc lozenge
contracted about 50 percent fewer colds. The study also showed that
if Zinc is used following the onset of cold symptoms, it can reduce
the duration of the illness by 4 days and dramatically reduce the need
for antibiotics. “Anything we can do to reduce the need for antibiotics
is helpful. In this study they were reduced by 92-percent,” Wolfe
said.
Zinc is considered safe for the prevention and treatment of colds in
children 12-18 years of age.

HEARTLAND EDITOR’S NOTE: Heartland’s Spray-eeze is great
source of zinc gultonate. This Spray Nutrition formula is specially
designed for fighting colds and allergies. Spray-eeze contains effective
doses of Vitamin C, Zinc and Echinacea used to strengthen the immune
system. Zinc kills the rhinovirus on contact and Echinacea has a powerful
anti-viral effect.
ALKALIZING YOUR BODY
“Five a day” is such a simple rule – yet it is one
on the best ways to protect your health. While your fresh veggies should
outnumber your daily fresh fruits in the five a day formula, many fruits
are more alkaline than vegetables. Berries are one of those super alkalizers
- all except blueberries, which are actually on the acid-forming side.
Berries are a great natural source of zinc in your diet. Berries are
a favorite among gourmet desserts and are easy to add to your diet as
just plain finger food. Since real heavy cream is neutral on the alkaline/acid
scale, why not enjoy an exquisite parfait of fresh berries to help create
alkaline balance in your body?
ALKALINE HIGHLIGHT: All kinds of berries (except blueberries) are highly-alkaline
forming at a 6.0 rating. Raspberries in particular are known for their
cancer-fighting properties, as well as strawberries. But watch for pesticides
– strawberries can be heavily sprayed. Remember, pies aren’t
the same as fresh berries, unless you discover one of those fantastic
raw berry pie recipes!
ACID HIGHLIGHT: Blueberries rate only a 3.5 on the scale, making them
an acid-forming food. Other fruits that interestingly enough land on
the acid side of the chart include cranberries, plums and prunes.
Golden Omega Milled Flaxseed is another great addition to a prostate-healthy
diet. In a study published in the July 2001 issue of Urology, “prostate
cancer patients who added about 3 heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseed
daily to their diet had more slowly-dividing tumor cells and a greater
rate of tumor cell death than men who did not follow this diet, after
about 5 weeks”. Order your milled flax today! Call 1-888-772-2345

RECIPES FOR HEALTH
SOME BERRY GOOD IDEAS (adapted from Rhonda Malkmus’ “Recipes
for Life”)
Page 150: Wash and gently mix together 1 ½ cups of your favorite
berries. Serve plain or make a sauce by pureeing part of the berries
together in a blender.
Page 191: Most fruits, eaten in proper combination, can be fully digested
in about 30 minutes. (Never eat fruit with other foods, because fruit
digests much faster than vegetables and grains. If you eat fruit with
other foods, this will require the fruit to sit around in your stomach
much longer than is necessary, leading to fermentation.) Because fruit
is able to go through your system so quickly, it is an excellent cleanser.
Eating fruit is a great way of adding fiber to your diet, and this fiber
helps the body to deal with the sugar content of the fruit.
