VALENTINE RUMINATIONS
How was your Valentine’s Day? Besides
any valentines that you did or did not receive, don’t forget
to become your own best valentine. Pour love into
yourself the way you would anyone you would love to see
grow, mature and glow with life. Love yourself.
Send yourself reminders of how special, unique and valuable
you are. Review your goals, write them down, and include
a daily goal to encourage yourself with words that nourish
your mind. Your mind spills over into your emotions,
into your actions, into who you are and what you say.
Listen to yourself. Watch the words that come out
of your mouth, for they are the barometer of your person.
You are not just what you eat, but what you think and say.
If you have any difficulties being your own best valentine,
think about it. Think good thoughts about yourself.
Erase other people’s negative thought recordings in your
brain and replace them with positive thoughts about yourself.
Your brain will believe you and begin a process of convincing
the rest of you. What you think becomes what you feel becomes
what you do becomes who you are. Tell yourself you
are loved, and you will become lovely. Then, you will
not only be your own best valentine, but you will become
even more attractive to the one who loves you or to the
one “out there” who, because of how you are able to love
yourself first, will not be able to resist falling in love
with you!

IN THE NEWS
MORE KUDOS for Dr. John R. Lee, who
for years has been teaching us about the effectiveness of
transdermal natural hormone replacement therapy and how
well natural progesterone absorbs through the skin.
From his January 2003 Medical Letter: “I found it
very entertaining, after enduring a decade of scorn from
the medical profession about the efficacy of transdermal
progesterone application (through the skin), that a birth
control skin patch was approved by the FDA and is now being
advertised in all the major media. I guess hormones
can be absorbed through the skin after all!”

Antibiotics To Bear New Warnings
Antibiotics soon will bear a big new
warning that overusing them makes them less effective. From
the February 6, 2003 release of the Associated Press Health
News, comes the news that antibiotics will soon carry a
new warning message mandated by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The new action was prompted because
it has long been known that antibiotics have been drastically
overused. According to the AP story, the new warning says
that doctors must be sure a patient is suffering a bacterial
infection, not a virus with similar symptoms, before prescribing
antibiotics. The article notes that all too often, doctors
prescribe antibiotics for children with earaches caused
by viruses, or for adults with colds or viral coughs.
Antibiotics have no effect on viruses;
they only fight bacteria. However, the US government estimates
that half of the 100 million antibiotic prescriptions written
in physician offices each year are unnecessary.
One of the reasons that the FDA action
has become so important is that bacteria are growing increasingly
resistant to antibiotics. Many common infections no longer
are treatable with old standbys like penicillin, and some
have become untreatable by every antibiotic on the market.
Anytime antibiotics are used, survivor germs can emerge
stronger and spread. It is the overuse of antibiotics that
has lead to the increased resistance by bacteria.
The FDA proposed the new warnings two
years ago. They will go into effect Feb. 6, 2004. Unfortunately,
the warnings would be only on the drugs official label,
and the AP story reports that very few doctors read drug
labels. Because of this, the FDA is working on additional
ways to spread their concern over the use of antibiotics,
including future ads aimed at consumers.
Have you considered the overuse of “anti-bacterials”
as hand soap? It parallels the overuse of anti-biotics.
As a safer alternative, get some enzyme-based soap like
Heartland’s powerful All-Purpose Solution. It is the absolute
best way to emulsify and (safely!) get rid of oils, especially
petrochemicals. It is wise to keep some handy to help
neutralize any kind of oil or petrochemical spill.
(Including washing your hands when you accidentally spill
gasoline, gas or oil spills in your garage or on your driveway,
cleaning up pesticide spills or off your hands, getting
grease off tools or engines, and, heaven forbid, any other
kind of undesired contact with petrochemical agents.

ALKALIZING YOUR BODY
Spices in general are alkaline-forming,
with “leafy green herbs” rating a 6.0, right alongside garlic.
Onions rate a 5.0 (remember 4.0 is neutral). Cayenne
is the alkaline superstar at a 7.0.
Antibiotic Spices?
The most ferocious killers of 30 bacterial
species in Cornell University tests are (in order) onion,
garlic, allspice, oregano, thyme, tarragon, cumin, cloves,
bay leaf and cayenne pepper.
Oregano vs. germs. "No wonder oregano has been used
since antiquity to fight infections," Preuss says.
He recently found oregano oil as effective as the common
antibiotic drug vancomycin in treating staph infections
in mice. Bonus: It wiped out an infectious fungus. A daily
dose of oregano oil, mixed with oils from fenugreek, cumin
and pumpkin seeds, reduced blood pressure and improved blood
sugar and insulin sensitivity in diabetic rats. In Texas
research, oregano killed parasites in humans. The point,
Preuss says: People who eat small regular doses of oregano
may get antibiotic and antidiabetic benefits, although more
tests on humans are needed to verify it.
