DID YOU KNOW?

Bugs are made out of oil! In your many attempts to remove pests from you home, garden or beloved pets, consider the anatomy of bugs. Since they are oil-based creatures with waxy protective coverings, what can you safely use to break down the wax and oil? Heartland has done the homework for you with its increasingly popular product, Bug Arrest™. Its incredible effectiveness against bugs and unparalleled safety to animals pivots on the biological make-up of each group: Bugs are oil-based and mammals are water-based. That means your kids are safe playing with your dog after you wash out his fleas.

This fascinating little fact is powerful when you are looking for pesticide alternatives. Flea Shampoos, pesticides and bug sprays normally contain poisons that damage the nervous system of the insects they intend to kill. These poisons contaminate the blood of every animal and human that breathes them, steps on them with bare feet or massages them with bare hands. They can even trigger asthma attacks or toxic reactions in people who are chemically sensitive or have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity). Worse, they can be the straw that broke the camels back for your own xenobiotic / detoxification pathways, finally clogging your system after years of small exposures. Then you have to contend with the symptoms of chemical sensitivity, estrogen dominance, or simply not feeling 100%.

John R. Lee, MD’s number one recommendation for “Cleaning Up Your House” is: “Throw away all pesticides, herbicides, fungicides. Take a class in organic gardening and read up on natural pest control. Do not tent your house and fumigate it with pesticides, or “bomb” it, or have your lawn sprayed with chemicals.”1 Lesson number one is to understand the basics of bug anatomy. What safely breaks apart oils serves as an effective pest control alternative. Lesson number two is that nothing comes close to Bug Arrest™ in powerfully breaking down oils without hurting humans, pets or the environment.

This is especially great news for the growing number of children with asthma. According to the American Lung Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood asthma has nearly doubled in the past 20 years. Toxic fumes from flea shampoos or other pesticides can trigger asthma attacks, which are now the leading cause of hospital admissions for children. Not only that, but asthma deaths among children and young people increased by 118% between 1980 and 1993. (EPA News Release, September 11, 1996).2

Keep your pets, children, and neighborhood safe with Bug Arrest™ and other natural solutions for you and your family from Heartland. For information on ordering, call 1-888-772-2345.

Q & A

How can I protect my children and pets from petrochemical exposure?

Besides replacing pesticides in your lawn, garden and home by choosing organic and natural alternatives like Bug Arrest™, evaluate your use of plastics, especially soft toys prone to be chewed on by pets or children. Plastics, in addition to most pesticides, are derived from petrochemicals, which add to our foreign, or “xeno” estrogen load, which is already at toxic levels for such a large number of people. In his helpful section “Cleaning Up Your House”, John R. Lee, MD reminds us to be aware that all plastics leach into the environment. The soft plastics such as are found in many baby toys and in some water bottles leach the most. He urges you NOT to let your child chew on plastic toys3. The same could be said for pets.

PVC is responsible for higher levels of toxicity in plastics. Greenpeace’s Toxic Fact Sheet states: “When you see a "non-toxic" label on a toy, you assume that toy is safe for your child. The label, however, might be deceptive. A Greenpeace investigation has revealed that toys made of soft PVC plastic (better known as vinyl) contain dangerous additives that can leak out of the plastic and be ingested by children. These chemicals, which include lead, cadmium, and toxic softeners, may cause permanent damage to the brain, liver and reproductive system.”4

You can find out from Greenpeace which toy manufacturers use the least PVC in toys. Kudos go to Brio, Early Start, Gerber, Lego Systems, Primetime Playthings, Sassy, and Tiny Love for an “A” grade – NO PVC. ALKALIZING YOUR BODY

While raw foodists and Atkins-type dieters may exclude grains entirely from their protocols, those with a living foods lifestyle choose grains wisely by using whole and sprouted grains, which are naturally less acid-forming. Here are the alkalinity-acidity ratings on grains:

ALKALINE HIGHLIGHT: Only three grains are alkaline-forming: Quinoa (the food of the ancient Incas), millet (a Biblical grain), and amaranth (an ancient type of wheat). They rate a 4.5 – slightly alkaline-forming. Look for these interesting grains at your local health food store, and try them in soups and side dishes to add variety the typical wheat – rice – corn – oats of American cereals and breads. Too much of a single grain can create allergies, which is why the two main food allergies in the US are wheat and corn. (And in Latin America and the Far East – rice!) NOTES: Quinoa is the grain with the highest level of protein. Sprouting grains (except wheat) makes them alkaline.

ACID HIGHLIGHT: Other grains in their whole form are slightly to moderately acid-forming while refined flours and breads are extremely acid forming.

RATINGS:
3.5: Unrefined rye crackers and spelt;
3.0: Barley, unrefined cereals, cornmeal, unrefined wheat or rice crackers, and organic sprouted ryebread;
2.5: Buckwheat, corn and rice breads, oats, whole grain pastas and pastries, basmati rice, brown rice, and sprouted organic wheatbread;
2.0: Unrefined cream of wheat, refined breads (corn, oats, rice & rye), refined cereals, wheatgerm and whole wheat foods;
1.5: White pasta, semolina, wheat bread and white rice;
1.0: White wheat flour, pastries and cakes

RECIPES FOR HEALTH

ROASTED GARLIC QUINOA
A Heartland consumer original

Per ½ cup of Quinoa:
3 cloves of garlic
1 small red onion
1 medium tomato (vine-ripened if possible)
Cilantro to taste

Rinse quinoa and measure 1 portion of quinoa to 2 portions of clean, pure water or homemade soup stock. Cook at lowest possible temperature until done (full and fluffy) – minimum 30 minutes after water is warm.
An easy and very tasty soup stock can be made with onion and garlic peels – simply heat in clean water at low temperature until stock is a beautiful golden brown, then discard the peels.

After quinoa is done, sauté sliced garlic in your preferred cooking oil or water. (Macadamia, coconut and sesame are good choices for cooking at higher temperatures). If you like the taste and benefits of extra-virgin olive oil, sauté in water then add raw oil later to taste. When garlic is golden or toasted, set aside and sauté sliced onion. Right before onion pieces are done, add chunks of tomatoes. When tomatoes soften, sprinkle cilantro on top and turn heat to off. On plate, serve quinoa first then sautéed mixture on top or on side. Sprinkle roasted garlic to taste.

HEALTHY KIDS VARIETY: Blend sautéed mixture with some of your kid’s favorite pasta sauce in blender until smooth. You can even add some raw tomatoes or small amounts of other raw veggies to mixture. Serve like pasta!
