D ID YOU KNOW?

Are you planning any New Year’s Resolutions this year? The synonym for resolution is “courage”. Let us en-“courage” you to make simple, key lifestyle changes this year. Courage is “firmness of mind in the face of danger”. Considering that over 80% of people in the United States face the danger of death by heart disease, stroke, cancer or complications of diabetes, arthritis or osteoporosis, we hope you will have the courage to choose simple, life-changing resolutions this year. Celebrate the ritual of the New Year! A fresh start, a stretch of momentum to propel you forward on your healthier lifestyle, and an opportunity to leave bad habits behind.

How do you keep resolution alive? Success comes by simplification. There are three definitions for “resolution” in Webster’s. The first one is “the act or process of reducing to simpler form, as the act of analyzing a complex notion into simpler ones”. New Year’s Resolutions are easier to keep when you break them down. For example, instead of resolving to “lose weight” (vague) simplify it to just one of the following (specific):

- No eating after 8 PM (use flax to fill up!)
- Drinking water first whenever feeling “hungry” (you may only be thirsty).
- Increasing fiber by taking ¼ cup of golden flax every day with a tall glass of water (just having enough daily fiber can equal 15 shed pounds over the course of a year! Remember to start slow and build up).
- Drinking the juice of one lemon every morning with water to alkalize (weight is also an acid problem).
- Replacing aspartame (Equal/Nutrasweet) with better choices. One of the many side effects of aspartame is cravings for calorie-rich junk food! Find and read information about the dangers of aspartame to create new resolve over the course of the year.
- Using natural progesterone to help balance excess estrogen, which makes the body store extra reserves of fat, especially around the abdominal area. (Read more in the newsletter archives.)

Besides simplicity, you can plan for success with your resolutions by:
1.) making them specific
2.) formulating a game plan
3.) creating a recurring reminder, and
4.) getting a little help from your friends and family.

One way to get help from your family is to ask them (if you have the courage…) what you should change in your life. If it is their idea, you have an instant team player. Ask them for help to make a plan.

If you need more help, invest in a personal coach or try one of the new online goal management programs. They’ll help you get specific, plan out success and even send you email reminders to help keep you on track.

SparkPeople.com (7.95 per month) says, “Real change takes time – and needs help. The key is to surround yourself with reminders that make your goals tough to ignore and impossible to forget. Finally, you need to actually do what you promised. You’re ultimately accountable to yourself and nobody else for your goals. You will find virtue and character in fulfilling that promise. After all, goal achievement is something you do year-round, not just in January.”

MyGoals.com (5.95 per month) says, “Setting a goal without formulating a plan is merely wishful thinking. In order for your resolution to have resolve, (as the word "resolution" implies), it must translate into clear steps that can be put into action. A good plan will tell you A) What to do next and B) What are all of the steps required to complete the goal.”

Finally, if you don’t want to make any New Year’s Resolutions because you don’t want to break them by February, why not make 21-day resolutions? Make a fresh resolution at the beginning of each month, and enjoy progressive steps to a better you. Everything you do makes a difference in the balance. Celebrate new, healthy choices one day at a time, and build a lifetime of results. In the end, each day is a microcosm of your life. Seize the day today.

Heartland wishes you a healthy and happy New Year. Be en-COURAGE-d this holiday to make natural changes for the health of you and your family. Keep it simple and specific, and see the difference it makes. Good luck with your goals this year!

A POWERFUL RESOLUTION

For weight loss, for cancer prevention, for energy, for detoxification, for asthma and much more, what is one of the most neglected habits essential to everyone? Water. Enough pure, clean water every day is one of the most powerful health and beauty habits you can cultivate. If this is your resolution for 2003, here are some tips and game plans to help get you there.

If you think you already are a “good” water drinker, take this test first, and confirm it by tracking your ounces for a few days. What feels like “a lot” of water may be only half of what your body really needs! Until you measure, you don’t know for sure that you are on target. The general rule is that you need to drink at least ½ your body weight in ounces every day.

IF YOU WEIGH*…
120 lbs., you need at least 60 ounces of water (approx. ½ gallon)
140 lbs., you need at least 70 ounces of water (9 glasses of 8 oz. each)
160 lbs., you need at least 80 ounces of water (10 glasses)
180 lbs., you need at least 90 ounces of water (approx. 3 quarts)
200 lbs., you need at least 100 ounces of water (12+ glasses)

*Add an additional 8 ounces for every cup of caffeine (coffee or soda)
*Add additional water for high stress (stress dehydrates!)

WHAT COUNTS FOR HYDRATION?
- Herbal teas (without sugars) and freshly squeezed lemon water count as water
- Juices do NOT count as water (unless they are freshly extracted with a juicer, like carrot juice)
- Raw vegetables and fruits count as water – salads work for hydration too.
- Sodas, milk, pasteurized juices, V-8, fruit punch, canned teas, coffee, etc. do NOT count as water.
- Coffee and sodas are diuretics – they take water OUT of your body!
- Tap water usually does NOT count as water because of chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and parasites.

TIPS FOR BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL WATER DRINKER:
- If you are not accustomed to drinking a lot of water, start SLOWLY. Do not flood your body.
- If you are concerned about running to the bathroom, drink only 4 ounces at a time, every ½ hour.
- Use a wristwatch with a recurring alarm to remind you to drink water every ½ hour or every hour.
- Give up the ice! If you don’t like room temperature water, test your water quality. Bad tasting water is covered up when ice cold. Good tasting / pure water should taste good at room temperature.
- Drink water alone (in between meals), and especially avoid when you are eating foods that contain salt.

A GAME PLAN:
Drink water like medicine. Fill enough bottles in the morning as if you were filling a pillbox with prescriptions. Take enough with you when you go out, and keep them in strategic places where it makes it most convenient to drink. Keep one in the bathroom, one by your bedside, in your purse, on your desk, in the car (but make sure to keep away from the hot sun – warm plastic releases estrogenic petroleum chemicals). Before dinner, tally up your drinking to make sure you have taken all your medicine before the day is done. First thing in the morning, tally up your empty bottles. Write down your total ounces for the day, refill your bottles with your favorite purified water, and start again. Many people find that the more they drink earlier in the day, the easier it is to succeed. Try to get a quart out of the way before leaving the house. Enjoy more energy, less hunger, and the peace that you are taking one of the best “medicines” in the world!

The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.

A RESOLUTION FOR PEACE
December 2002, http://endgossip.com/newyears.html
Lori Palatnik and Bob Burg, co-authors of GOSSIP: Ten Pathways To Eliminate It From Your Life And Transform Your Soul (Simcha Press) are asking everyone to give up "gossip" (defined as any type of harmful or hurtful communication that is not 'absolutely necessary' to share) for their 2003 New Year's Resolution.

Gossip ruins lives, assassinates reputations, splits families, alienates friends, and destroys businesses.
On the other hand, a gossip-free environment results in peaceful lives, healthy relationships and overall prosperity.

"Spread the word" to all your friends, family, co-workers, fellow congregants, teammates, classmates and anyone and everyone else who comes to mind. You can do it. We can ALL do it! Commit to end all forms of gossip and evil speech as your 2003 New Year's Resolution, and encourage everyone you know to do the same.

Give Up Gossip For Your New Year's Resolution. A New Year's Resolution You Can Make . . . And Keep!
Make it a great (and gossip-free) 2003!

RECIPES FOR HEALTH

If your digestion is out of balance with heavier-than-normal holiday eating, here are some tips on how to sooth your system.

FLAXSEED TEA
A recipe for peaceful digestion!
From Dr. Jensen’s Guide to Better Bowel Care, By Dr. Bernard Jensen (pages 70 & 120-121.)

“For an irritated bowel, I recommend flaxseed tea. Flaxseed tea with a teaspoon of chlorophyll assists in relieving the irritated conditions in the bowel that can produce a lot of gas and disturbance. Rice and barley gruel also help with gas disturbances, as do apples, which are very high in organic sodium and potassium, and feed the bowel wall with these necessary minerals.”

“To prepare the tea, use one rounded teaspoon of flaxseed (whole) in one and one-quarter cups of water for each cup of tea. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn off the heat and let it sit until cooled. The tea is slippery and mucilaginous. If desired, strain the tea and discard the seeds. Store in the refrigerator.”
