DID YOU KNOW
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While you could
be out marching and wearing pink ribbons, there is also
a lot you can do to reduce your risk for breast cancer.
The knowledge of how and why is available here, in our newsletter
archives, through our educational products and via our toll-free
helpline. Our product line is designed to give you tools
to fight excess estrogen naturally, including plant-based
cleaning products, petroleum-free shampoo, alcohol-free
natural progesterone cream, and the most gently cut golden
flaxseed you can find. If there is one thing we hope for
as a natural products company, it is that there is less
suffering and death from estrogen dominance-based diseases
like breast cancer, especially for you and your family.
HEARTLAND’S 10 BREAST CANCER PREVENTION TIPS
1. Drink ½ your body weight in ounces of purified
water daily.
2. Alkalize your diet by eating or juicing enough fruits
and vegetables, including cruciferous vegetables (broccoli,
Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, kale, mustard
greens, rutabagas and turnips.)
3. Manage stress through proper rest, exercise, and nurturing
relationships.
4. For those with cancer… starve your tumor by removing
sugars (including most fruits) and fats from your diet.
Refer to “Beating Cancer with Nutrition” by
Dr. Patrick Quillian. This book also provides support on
how to speak with your oncologist. Also, find out about
the dangers Tamoxifen and Raloxifene from Dr. John Lee’s
“What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer”.
5. Use hormone-free beef and chicken, eggs and milk to avoid
the synthetic estrogens. This is especially important to
help young girls avoid early puberty, a risk factor for
breast cancer.
6. Avoid petrochemical products (detergents, air fresheners,
pesticides, disinfectants, solvents, plastics).
7. Eliminate HRT (synthetic estrogens and progestins); consider
alternatives to birth control pills.
8. Balance excess estrogen with Heartland Natural Progesterone
Cream.
9. Use Golden Omega Flaxseed in cooking, baking and/or as
a supplement for its anti-cancer phytochemicals (called
lignans). Breast and prostate cancer are most affected by
lignan activity.
10. Read Dr. John Lee’s book “What Your Doctor
May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer”. This well-researched
yet clear and practical book is “a must-read for every
woman over forty” according to Dr. Earl Mindell, author
of The Vitamin Bible.
From the authors:
“A good portion of this book will focus on the conditions
under which estrogens can cause cancer and how progesterone
can help you prevent it, but we don’t want you to
skip over all the diet and exercise advice and go straight
to the progesterone as if it’s a cure-all. It’s
an amazing substance, but it’s not a magic pill; it’s
one chemical among thousands in your body.
Estrogen, although pretty much cast as the villain in this
story, is just as necessary to life and health in a woman
as progesterone is. It just so happens that our reliance
on petrochemical (petroleum-oil-based) products has created
a world that is awash in an excess of environmental or exogenous
estrogen, from the air we breathe to the food we eat and
the furniture we sit on. Progesterone is what opposes, or
balances, estrogen in your body, and thus gets to play the
role of the hero. Neither of these substances is inherently
good or bad; both are just part of the complex orchestra
of biochemistry that keeps your body going.
Balancing your estrogen and progesterone levels isn’t
a cure-all either – especially if you’re still
spraying your roses with pesticides, microwaving your food
in plastic wrap, bingeing on french fries and snack chips,
and regularly stressing yourself out to the point of exhaustion.
If this describes you, you need to take better care of yourself
and change your lifestyle, starting now. We’ll provide
you with information on how to do this. The good news is
that in the process of taking steps to prevent breast cancer,
you’ll also be preventing other types of cancer, heart
disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, allergies, and many
other chronic diseases.”

Calif. Urges Study of Alarming Breast Cancer Rates
Thu Oct 24,10:46 AM ET
By Andrew Quinn
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Faced with an alarming and unexplained
rise in new breast cancer cases, California officials called
on Wednesday for a pilot program to monitor breast milk
for signs that environmental contamination plays in a role
in the deadly disease. "When women in America today
are getting breast cancer at a rate that is three times
the rate of 50 years ago, something is seriously wrong,"
State Assemblyman Dario Frommer said at a special joint
meeting of the legislature's health committees. Breast cancer
rates across the country have increased steadily in recent
years, with the risk of a woman contracting the disease
at some point during her life now at 1-in-8, against 1-in-22
just 50 years ago. Nationally, breast cancer is the leading
cause of death in women aged 34 to 55, killing more than
40,000 women across the country every year.
Frommer and state Senator Deborah Ortiz said they planned
to introduce legislation early next year that would make
California the first state in the nation to embark on a
program to monitor breast milk for chemical contaminants--hoping
to draw a link between such everyday products as pesticides,
fuels, plastics and detergents and increasing numbers of
breast cancer patients in the state.
Wednesday's special legislative hearing in San Francisco
was called to address the latest studies of breast cancer
incidence, and what some scientists say is mounting evidence
that environmental toxins are contributing to the disease.
"I believe it is high time to seriously consider environmental
chemicals as the most likely cause of this sudden increase
in risk," said Dr. Ana Soto, a breast cancer specialist
at Tufts Medical School. While many breast cancer studies
focus on genetics, or lifestyle factors such as reproductive
history, alcohol use and exercise, Soto said there was little
being done to assess how environmental toxins may be causing
cancer.
"The increasing risk of breast cancer and other cancers
has paralleled the proliferation of synthetic chemicals
since World War II," Soto said, adding that only 7%
of the estimated 85,000 synthetic chemicals registered for
use in the United States had been subjected to toxicological
screening. Dr. Gina Solomon, a senior scientist at the National
Resources Defense Council, said drawing more links between
environmental toxins and breast cancer could help to broaden
understanding of who develops the disease and why.

ALKALIZING YOUR BODY
It’s no surprise that flaxseed is alkalizing. Flax
oil is second only to olive oil in alkalinity. Canola oil
is also alkaline, although less than flax and olive oil.
Other oils fall on the acid side of the chart.
According to Dr. Baroody, one of the advanced symptoms
of over-acidity is cancer. Excess acid waste in the body
comes from eating to many acid-forming foods and not enough
alkaline forming foods. This can be turned around by alkalizing
your body!
Besides being alkaline, flaxseed has also been researched
for its anti-cancer activity, especially for estrogen-dominance
based cancers (breast, uterine and prostate cancers) because
of the lingans found in flax.
Dr. Susan Love explains the many health benefits of lignans:
“Flax contains abundant amounts of lignans, which
bind to estrogen receptors and modulates estrogen levels.
Lignans protect the body against cancer, especially colon
and breast cancer, as well as arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular
disorders. Generous portions of lignans in the diet can
reduce blood levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
Flax is the richest source of omega-3 essential fatty acids,
including alpha-linolenic acid. It has almost twice as much
omega-3 fatty acids as fish oil. Omega-3 oils are polyunsaturated
fatty acids that possess a variety of important biological
functions in the body. In addition, flaxseed contains linoleic
acid, an omega-6-fatty acid that may also provide protection
against cancer.”

A RECIPE FOR BEAUTY
HEALTHY HAIR GEL
Flax is an amazing crop – from it are made fabrics,
flooring, paints and the super health-enhancing edible seeds.
But who would consider it as hairdressing? Before so many
hair products lined the shelves at the supermarket, flax
mucilage was used as hair gel to create shiny, soft tresses
with added body and shape. For those of us desiring to avoid
all the chemicals and artificial fragrances common in hair
gels, this is great news!
¼ cup Whole Golden Omega Flaxseed
1 cup distilled or purified water
To make your own hair gel, add the whole flax seeds to
the water and heat for approximately five minutes on stovetop
at a medium temperature. Remove from heat. Place the mixture
in a strainer and wait for gel to seep through. Use a spoon
to help straining process. The gel will be thinner or thicker
depending on how long you heat it or allow it to steep in
the water. It is easier to apply a more viscous (thinner)
gel as a hair dressing. Optional: once cooled, add your
favorite pure essential oil.
For stiffer hair, simply apply more of the gel to the hair.
For added body, rub gel into scalp. For de-frizzing, smooth
the gel on surface of hair. It works well to comb through
with a wide tooth comb, brush or hair pick. Then use fingers
to shape and set. If preferred, dip your comb directly in
the gel first, then apply to hair.
Save leftover gel in fridge to continue using for the rest
of the week. This works incredibly well for hard-to manage
curly hair, and adds healthy moisture to dry hair.
