DID YOU KNOW

It isn’t necessary to use chemical sprays to control insects, or chemical shampoos to control lice, mites or fleas. University entomology departments around the world have the latest technology on bug control with organic and natural methods, and pest control companies are catching on. Chemical spraying of pyrethroids (commonly used insecticides) is based on methods and technology dating back to the 1950’s. Organic and natural pest control, on the other hand, takes advantage of the most recent knowledge and technologies gleaned from university research. As it turns out, organic and natural pest management is finding a much higher success rate than traditional chemical spraying.

It is worth looking into, as the estrogenic effects of pyrethroids and other synthetic insecticides are linked to estrogen dominance. It is already established that these chemicals interrupt the body’s normal endocrine system by acting like estrogen in the body, leaving a wake of breast cancer and other health risks. (1)

Humans are not the only ones affected. Some say, “pets are people too” – or at least “family too” and deserve healthy alternatives to pesticides. Pets are adversely affected by chemical spraying of insecticides, and suffer the same estrogen imbalances and toxic neurological effects. Flea shampoos for pets are in the same category as toxic pesticides, and may contain pyrethroids. Children that play with dogs can also be adversely affected by flea shampoos used on dogs, especially children with asthma or other allergies.

While you or your children may not be overtly “sensitive” to these sprays or shampoos, everyone’s brain is – your brain, your child’s brain, your dog’s brain, etc., including the wildlife in your backyard. Just like with cigarette smoke, while you may not cough or get a headache from it, you know that it is still harming your lungs, and you probably choose to avoid it. Such it is with chemical bug spraying. Whether you react to it or not, it is still harming your brain and endocrine systems. Find alternatives! You, your children and your pets deserve the health-giving benefits of a chemical-free garden and home.

Heartland’s Bug Arrest is one of the indispensable tools of organic gardeners and pet enthusiasts. It has none of the toxicity of pyrethroids yet is unequivocally effective for washing out fleas, mites and lice from animals. IN THE NEWS

THE NATURAL WAY: CHEMICALS NOT BEST MOSQUITO SOLUTION
08/02/2002 Summary of article by Howard Garrett

Question:
What can prevent the widespread spraying of pesticides to kill mosquitoes that may be carrying the West Nile virus? It seems spraying exposes us to greater danger than the virus.
B.M., Dallas

Answer:
You're right. Spraying or fogging is of questionable benefit. If it has to be done to appease the public, products should be used that kill adult mosquitoes but do no harm to animals, people or the environment. There are several effective organic alternatives, including garlic products, cedar products, and citronella products. Sprays including synthetic pyrethroids (resmethrin) are neurotoxins and are particularly hard on people with asthma and other allergies. These chemicals have been responsible for creating insect pest immunity and even "super pests." In addition, these products now contain piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a synthetic chemical that interferes with the insect's system of neutralizing toxins. It makes the pesticide more effective at killing the targeted pest, but that override of the natural detox system also is a concern for birds, pets and humans. (2)

ALKALIZING YOUR BODY

Alkalinity builds. Acidity breaks down. Acid/Alkaline balance is required for health. “The more imbalanced we allow our bodies to become, mentally, emotionally and physically, the more susceptible we are to viral infections.” Why? Viruses, fungi and bacteria are opportunists that eat waste acids and create even more toxicity with their own wastes. “An aberrant virus, fungus or bacteria in the body can only survive in an acid environment.” (3)

How do you know if you are too acid? Dr. Baroody provides us with an ACID SYMPTOM CHECKLIST: (4)

BEGINNING SYMPTOMS: Acne, Agitation, Muscular pain, Cold hands and feet, Dizziness, Low energy, Joint pains that travel, Food allergies, Chemical sensitivities to odors/gas heat, Hyperactivity, Panic attacks, Pre-menstrual and menstrual cramping, Pre-menstrual anxiety and depression, Lack of sex drive, Bloating, Heartburn, Diarrhea, Constipation, Hot urine, Strong smelling urine, Mild headaches, Rapid panting breath, Rapid heartbeat, Irregular heartbeat, White coated tongue, hard to get up in morning, Excess head mucous (stuffiness), metallic taste in mouth.

INTERMEDIATE SYMTOMS: Cold sores (Herpes I & II), Depression, Loss of memory, Loss of concentration, Migraine headaches, Insomnia, Disturbance in smell/taste/vision/hearing, Asthma, Bronchitis, Hay fever, Ear aches, Hives, Swelling, Viral infections (colds, flu), Bacterial infections (staph, strep), Fungal infections (candida albicans, athlete’s foot, vaginal), Impotence, Urethritis, Cystitis, Urinary infection, Gastritis, Colitis, Excessive falling hair, Psoriasis, Endometriosis, Stuttering, Numbness and tingling, Sinusitis.

ADVANCED SYMPTOMS: Crohn’s disease, Schizophrenia, Learning disabled, Hodgkin’s Disease, Systemic Lupus Erythematosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Sarcoidosis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Myasthenia gravis, Scleroderma, Leukemia, Tuberculosis, All other forms of cancer.

Take heart! Your body is regenerating itself continuously, and you can regain alkaline/acid balance by eating 80% alkaline-forming foods (vegetables, most fruits, certain oils, nuts and raw honey, etc) and 20% acid-forming foods (meats, most grains, processed and artificial sugars, sodas, drugs) and using moderation in eating, exercise and emotional management. Don’t forget to laugh and live life in the present. Every good thing you do for your body counts and is worth it!

RECIPES FOR HEALTH

When life gives you lemons, use them to alkalize your life and your recipes!

One of the tasty secrets in Greek cuisine is to squeeze fresh lemon juice into chicken broth. It is not only delectable, but creates more alkalinity for the meal.

Many people have incorporated the habit of squeezing lemon into their water bottle. It is not only a great daily habit, but also super alkalizing! Lemon water and herbal teas qualify as water replacements in your efforts to drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day. (Examples: 120 lbs. = 60 ounces of water per day; 150 lbs. = 75 ounces of water per day; 180 lbs. = 90 ounces of water per day, etc.) Many other beverages actually increase your body’s need for water, especially sodas and coffee.

If you love lemonade but are determined to stay away from the acid-forming effects of processed white sugar, make lemonade with pure maple syrup, panela (real brown sugar bricks), dried sugar cane juice (natural sugar cane is actually nutritious) or fresh apple juice. Train your taste buds over a few weeks, and you will find that you can enjoy a whole new beverage routine. Add your new lemonade to fresh herbal tea to create a wonderful iced tea that the whole family can enjoy. Freeze ½ filled bottles on their side. Before leaving, finish filling and pack for the day – enjoy a cool beverage anytime.

For the adventurous, try Stanley Burrough’s “Lemonade Diet”: 2 tbls. Lemon juice, 2 tbls. Maple syrup, 1/10 teas. Cayenne pepper in 8 ounces of purified water. Make sure to use real, preferably organic ingredients. This great energizer and alkalizer can also be used for cleansing and fasting. (5)
