The reason why worry kills more people than work is that
more people worry than work.

interests, I forget to worry.

DID YOU KNOW?
Women who use natural hormone replacement therapy (sometimes
called “NHRT”) worry less than women who have
tried HRT (conventional hormone replacement therapy). Why?
First of all, because women have “voted” with
whether or not they continue the therapy. Women easily quit
HRT, but stick with NHRT. Second, recently published research
has finally gotten sufficient media attention to communicate
the serious risks of HRT in terms of breast cancer and heart
disease, and has caused great concern for women still using
HRT.
What is the difference between ERT, HRT and natural HRT?
John R. Lee, MD and his colleagues distinguish between them
in his most recent book “What Your Doctor May Not
Tell You About Breast Cancer”, which incidentally
has an entire chapter dedicated to how HRT can cause cancer
(his book was published no less than 6 months prior to the
JAMA article reporting the breast cancer risks for HRT (Prempro)
users in the Women’s Health Initiative study and the
ensuing media blitz.)
Here is the difference:
“ERT is estrogen replacement therapy, often prescribed
by physicians for women who don’t have a uterus due
to a hysterectomy (surgical menopause). NOTE: This is one
of the deadliest and most costly errors in approach that
conventional medicine takes. Estrogen should never be taken
alone. Period.
Conventional HRT uses any number of types of estrogen –
both natural and synthetic – usually in high doses,
and it uses a synthetic progestin. The patient compliance
rate for HRT is terrible – only about 15 percent of
women who start taking it actually end up staying with it.
NOTE: Progestins are now recognized as creating an even
higher cancer risk than estrogen alone for HRT users. Women
using progestins for birth control (especially Depo-Provera)
have reason for concern! No long-term studies have shown
they are safe.
In contrast, NHRT uses natural estrogen in the smallest
possible dose when it’s needed, and natural progesterone
in small, physiologic doses that match what a woman’s
body makes when it’s ovulating. Patient compliance
is extremely high. Most clinicians estimate that about 95
percent on their patients on NHRT stick with it.”
(1) NOTE: Natural progesterone is actually used for protection
against breast cancer.
Since the overwhelming studies published in JAMA in 2000
and 2002 showing the serious risks of HRT, more women and
their doctors are turning to NHRT. The good news for doctors
is that there is now more demand and more positive research
for the use of NHRT. This will hopefully lessen the negativity
they might experience from other conventional doctors and
drug company reps. Best yet, since women talk to each other
about health issues, Dr. John R. Lee reports that that doctors
who help women with NHRT often become the busiest doctors
in town. Talk to your doctor about NHRT. Share books and
research with them. True health is in the hands of women
who are willing to read and research, and create a bigger
demand for doctors who will listen.

IN THE NEWS
Summarized from a article by Patricia Anstett, Knight
Ridder Newspapers, published in the Dominion Post Newspaper
on July 27, 2002
DETROIT -- As American medicine rewrites the rules of managing
menopause, one trend is clear: Women are eager to know more
about natural options. Driven by baby boomers entering menopause,
the trend to replace hormone replacement therapy is soaring,
particularly since this month's landmark announcement that
hormone therapy may do more harm to women's health than
good when taken long-term. Doctors are using tools unknown
to many women just a few years ago. They include natural
progesterone cream, dabbed on tummies and soft skin spots
daily to relieve mood swings, water retention, dry skin
and other problems.
The natural approaches are largely uncharted. No one knows
how many women use these products, which can be purchased
without a prescription in health food stores or from the
Internet. One company estimates the nation's natural menopause
treatment market at $20 million, from the sale of products
at health food stores alone. ''We're seeing an absolute
explosion in interest,'' Moskowitz, a doctor of naturopathy,
a type of holistic medicine, said.
Women such as Susan Shuttleworth, 51, of Royal Oak, Mich.,
a longtime Budd Co. secretary, say they are happy to pay
for a product that works for them. ''I decided nuts to synthetic
hormones; I want the natural products,'' Shuttleworth said.
After three months of using progesterone cream, she reports
no hot flashes, improved concentration and no mood swings,
as before. Shuttleworth's physician, Dr. Mary Bunker, has
made a point of following hormone research for the past
10 years. She and other natural hormone proponents acknowledge
a lack of carefully done scientific studies on the natural
products but she added: ''We don't have the double-blind
placebo studies, but we didn't have them until recently
for hormone replacement either.''
HEARTLAND NOTE: John R. Lee, MD comments that “physicians
waiting for a double blind, placebo-controlled study to
prove to them that topical progesterone does indeed prevent
estrogen-induced endometrial proliferation as, for example,
medroxy-progesterone acetate (MPA) does … need to
wait no longer. Dr. Helene Leonetti and colleagues have
published just such a study, finding that both vaginal and
transdermal progesterone, in low physiologic doses, effectively
blocks endometrial cell proliferation in postmenopausal
women receiving Premarin.” (2)

ALKALIZING YOUR BODY
One of the most important recommendations for longevity
and anti-aging is moderation at mealtimes. One of the best
ways to increase moderation in consumption is to increase
chewing during each bite. Incidentally, chewing more also
creates added alkalinity to any food. Another anti-aging
regimen is the inclusion of essential fatty acids in small
amounts at every meal.
ALKALINE HIGHLIGHT: Saliva! What does your spit have to
do with alkalizing your food? In Dr. Baroody’s general
eating guidelines, he recommends to “chew food 25-50
times per mouthful. An alkaline-forming enzyme called ptyalin
is present in our saliva. The more you chew any food, the
easier it digests and the more alkaline-forming it becomes.
For instance, brown rice (acid forming) if chewed 100 times
per mouthful becomes alkaline-forming because of the increased
ptyalin mixed with it as well as the increased digestibility
of liquid”. (3)
ACID HIGHLIGHT: Fish. A great source of essential fatty
acids, fish is often touted as the best animal meat choice.
Of all animal meats, it is the least acid forming (although
only a 2.0). Dr. John R. Lee recommends omega-3-rich fish
two or three times weekly, because the omega-3 essential
fatty acids found in fish seem to promote anti-inflammatory
prostaglandins that inhibit cell proliferation. (4) The
best fish for omega-3 content are deep-water fish such as
herring, sardines, and cod. Salmon is also rich in omega-3
content.
NOTE: Most fish contain undesirable levels of methylmercury.
The FDA has warned against dangerous levels of mercury in
swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish – these
four fish are on their “do not eat” list for
pregnant women. The FDA has also cautioned pregnant women
to limit their intake of tuna. The best fish for avoiding
mercury content include summer flounder, wild pacific salmon,
croaker, sardines, haddock, and tilapia.
For those who prefer not to eat fish, another great source
of omega-3 fatty acids is ground flax seed. The best ground
flax seed is properly milled (as opposed to ground, as in
a coffee grinder) to not damage the molecules. For
your health and convenience, Heartland now carries organic
milled golden flaxseed. Call 888-772-2345 for details.

RECIPES FOR HEALTH
Broccoli Floret Butter & Broccoli Garlic Pesto
(Another Heartland original)
Fresh broccoli
Extra-virgin olive oil
Fresh garlic (optional)
Garlic salt or favorite seasonings
Broccoli is well known for its cancer fighting properties.
Try this snazzy “butter” on sandwiches, salads,
or with fish. Try also as a wonderful dip for fresh, crunchy
vegetables.
Divide fresh broccoli into florets and stems. Only use
the tips to make the broccoli butter. Use all the stem parts
to make “broccoli sticks” (a colorful addition
to carrot sticks). The thick bottom stems of the broccoli
can also be cut into sticks or “stars”. First
remove tough outer skin with a paring knife or peeler. Then
cut the heart of the stem lengthwise into tender broccoli
sticks. For “stars” cut across the stem.
Place florets in blender and add just enough extra-virgin
olive oil in order to blend into a smooth, buttery consistency.
For pesto, add one clove of fresh garlic. For a savory butter,
add your favorite spice blend or a dash of garlic salt.
