DID YOU KNOW

American women are experiencing an epidemic of hormone related health issues. As more and more baby boomers hit menopause, they are demanding answers that don't hurt their bodies or accelerate their aging. But don't wait until menopause to look at how hormonal imbalances affect your health. More than 50 percent of women over age 35 are deficient in progesterone and many more - from puberty to post- menopause, are suffering with the cyclical discomforts and toxic effects of excess estrogen.

It is much more than just PMS, bloating, hot flashes and night sweats. In his new book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer" John R. Lee, MD carefully and clearly documents the relationship between hormone imbalances and breast cancer. On page 124 he writes:

"The bottom line is that estrogen is intricately woven into the initiation and promotion of breast cancer, right down to the level of your genes, your DNA, and your immune system. Exposure to excess estrogen, both from imbalances within the body and from sources outside the body (such as pesticides), increases the chances that things can go wrong at the cell level - which in turn damages the DNA, which in turn disrupts communication within the cell. You can protect yourself from these dangerous changes in your cells by avoiding excess estrogens, using supplemental progesterone if your levels are low, keeping you DHEA levels normal, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes adequate rest, relaxation, exercise, stress management, and a wholesome diet that provides the building blocks of the protective systems that neutralize and safely excrete toxins from the body."

QUESTION & ANSWER

What can I use in place of chemical pesticides to avoid excess estrogen exposure?

Besides imitating estrogen and disrupting hormone balance, pesticides are damaging first and foremost to your brain, which is command central for your immune system, respiratory system, endocrine system, etc. Pesticides aren't just "brain poison" to insects but to humans and pets, too. Removing pesticides is one of the most powerful steps you can take for protecting your family's health, and is critical for children, whose neurological systems are in development.

Heartland has a natural solution specifically designed to deter or wash out bugs without harming pets, children, interrupting your hormone balance or exposing your family to brain toxins. Bug Arrest(tm) has become one of our hottest sellers! You are in for a big treat as you arm yourself with a solution that works without working against your health. ALKALIZING YOUR BODY

One of the simplest natural health laws is to maintain an alkaline environment in the body. While mainly fruits, vegetables and nuts create alkalinity, meats, cereals, and sugars create an acid environment. If you eat 50 - 90 % alkaline forming foods and drinks (temperate climates require less, tropical climates require more), you can remove yourself from the SAD (Standard American Diet) statistics and dramatically reduce your risk of disease (over 80% of "SAD" consumers die of a degenerative disease.)

ALKALINE HIGHLIGHT: Lemons. They might taste sour and acid, but in your body they are one of the most alkalizing substances you can consume! A great balancing habit is to drink 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice in 4 ounces of water every morning. Limes and pineapples are also extremely alkaline-forming, while grapefruits and oranges are only moderately alkaline forming. Remember that cooking reduces alkalinity - and pasteurized juices in the store are COOKED. Go for the fresh, unchanged, original fruit and enjoy better health!

ACID HIGHLIGHT: Artificial Sweeteners. They top the charts of acid-forming "non"-foods. Besides the risk of partial blindness and potential cancer-forming agents, artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame, are very harmful to the brain and memory. Replace artificial sweeteners with stevia, agave nectar, fructose, or honey. Note: raw honey is slightly alkaline forming while processed honey is slightly acid forming.

RECIPES FOR HEALTH

Minty Cucumber Salad
From "The Raw Gourmet" by Nomi Shannon - page 59

2 cups chopped cucumbers
1/2 cups finely chopped mint
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil or grapeseed oil
3 drops stevia or 1 teaspoon maple syrup (optional)
-------------------------------------------------------------

Cucumber is an alkalizing food. It is considered to have a purifying effect on the digestive system, and is very beneficial to the skin. For a refreshing lift, lie down with a cucumber slice over each eye for a few minutes or rub a slice over your face after cleansing to tone and purify your skin.

If your cucumber tastes bitter, slice it, place it in a bowl, sprinkle it with sea salt and set a weight on it. A plate with a gallon (4 liter) water jug on top or a zip-lock bag filled with water works well. Leave the cucumber at room temperature for two hours, rinse it lightly and pat dry, then proceed with the recipe.

Fresh mint is, of course, best to use with this recipe, but dried mint (five teaspoons) will work if you have time to allow the flavors to blend. In a small serving bowl, combine the cucumbers, mint, parsley, lemon juice and oil. Toss together. Taste and add stevia if desired. Chill the salad for several hours or overnight. Toss again before serving. Serves 2-3.
