DID YOU KNOW
Lice Arrest WORKS! But How Do The Enzymes Help Conquer
Lice?
For some of us, the world of insects, arthropods and bugs
is fascinating. For the rest of us, bugs just bug us, especially
when they invade our personal space the way head lice can.
But a little bug anatomy can go a long way when it gives
us the tools to stop lice in their tracks. This is the case
with Lice Arrest, Heartland's enzyme-based shampoo that
naturally tackles the outer shell of each little louse through
enzymes right from the plant and insect world.
Lice, like other insects, have exoskeletons, meaning that
the structural part of their body is on the outside instead
of the inside. When insects grow, they use protease enzymes
to "split" open their old exoskeleton in order to allow
a larger structure to replace it. Technically this is called
"ecdysis", not molting (molting is for the birds). As described
in the Hutchinson Family Encyclopedia, ecdysis is the "periodic
shedding of the exoskeleton by insects and other arthropods
to allow for growth. Prior to shedding, a new soft and expandable
layer is laid down underneath the existing one. The old
layer then splits, the animal moves free of it, and the
new layer expands and hardens." Without protease enzymes,
insects would be trapped in their own exoskeletons and be
crushed to death by their own growth.
Lice Arrest contains the same natural protease enzymes
that "unzip" this exoskeleton. The enzymes in Lice Arrest
break down the waxy layer covering of the exoskeleton of
the lice as well as naturally initiating the shedding process,
making it difficult for the lice to survive. The enzymes
also soften the strong "glue" that holds the nit to the
hair shaft, making the nit easier to comb out of the hair.
What a relief for lice sufferers to find out that Lice Arrest
WORKS! Read on to the "Dear Heartland" section to hear some
of the many positive responses from Lice Arrest customers.
A NOTE ON SAFETY...For the 20 million Americans that get
lice each year, Lice Arrest is tough on lice, NOT on people!
The naturally occurring enzymes in this revolutionary product
are non-toxic to people and pets (unless your pets come
from your fascination with the insect world). Since Lice
Arrest doesn't use poisoning as a method of killing the
lice, the lice cannot grow immune, nor is there any chance
of also poisoning the humans using the product. Lice Arrest
works to keep you and your children safe from poison and
free of lice! For more on Lice Arrest safety, click on http://www.heartlandnatural.com/lice_infosafe.htm
Some other handy lice anatomy tid-bits...
~ A louse cannot hop or jump. They can, however, crawl very
fast!
~ Nymphs (newly hatched lice) cannot lay eggs for at least
7 days.
~ Lice only survive from 6 to 24 hours off a human head,
depending on the humidity.

HOT NEWS
Kids At Risk - Chemicals Come Under Scrutiny
Highlights from US News Cover Story 6/19/00 by Sheila Kaplan
and Jim Morris
A growing body of evidence suggests that compounds called
neurotoxicants may be contributing significantly to the
increase in childhood disorders such as autism, aggression,
dyslexia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
These disorders now affect one out of every six children
in America. In California, reported cases of autism rose
210 percent between 1987 and 1998, and in New York, the
number of children with learning disabilities jumped 55
percent between 1983 and 1996. Neurotoxicants are found
in substances as common as tuna, lawn sprays, vaccines,
and HEAD-LICE SHAMPOO [All pediculicides, or pesticide-based
lice treatments, are considered neurotoxins].
A new study from the National Academy of Sciences suggests
that a combination of neurotoxicants and genes may account
for nearly 25 percent of developmental problems. "Think
of the genes as the country road," says John Harris of the
California Birth Defects Monitoring Program. "And the neurotoxicants
as driving 90 miles per hour in the rain."
Children are particularly vulnerable to toxic chemicals.
Normal brain development begins in the uterus and continues
through adolescence. It requires a series of complex processes
to occur in a carefully timed sequence. Cells proliferate
and move to the correct spot, synapses form, neural circuits
are refined, and neurotransmitters and their receptors grow.
Neurotoxicants may slow, accelerate, or otherwise modify
any of these processes. Says Philip Landrigan of New York's
Mt. Sinai School of Medicine: "You end up with gaps in the
wiring."
Today the federal government is under increasing pressure
from pediatricians, academics, and its own scientists, all
clamoring for more testing of neurotoxicants. There are
still many unanswered questions about neurotoxicants and
their effects on children. Richard Jackson, of the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, says that the easy work
is done. "We've been able to find the things that are so
toxic that they make people dizzy and fall down," he says.
Now comes the harder work of identifying and regulating
compounds that insidiously misarrange the brain. "I've heard
people say we still don't have a smoking gun," says Chris
De Rosa of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
"And then I've heard others say, 'Yes, but there are bullets
all over the floor.' "

Heartland also highly recommends avoiding pediculicides
lice treatments to help protect your children from unnecessary
neurotoxic exposure, especially when non-toxic solutions
like Lice Arrest work so well.
