FAQ's about L-Tryptophan

What is L-Tryptophan?

L-Tryptophan is an amino acid essential for normal growth and metabolism*. It is a precursor to serotonin, melatonin, and niacin. Highly recognized for more than a quarter century for its health benefits, L-Tryptophan is beneficial for:

  • Maintaining good health*
  • Normalizing Sleep*
  • Relieving Poor Moods & Irritability*

L-Tryptophan may help support the body's natural ability for normal sleep and balanced moods.

Why should I use L-Tryptophan?

Plasma amino-acid profiles of hundreds of people demonstrate that L-Tryptophan may be the amino acid most lacking our diet. No other amino acid, vitamin, mineral, herb or drug can take the place of L-Tryptophan. L-Tryptophan is a building block for health and is routinely added to baby food (where it is essential for growth) and to intravenous solutions (IV’s) (where it is essential for life).

Sources of L-Tryptophan

Foods that are considered sources of L-Tryptophan are dairy products, beef, poultry, eggs, barley, bananas, brown rice, fish; and a variety of seeds, beans and nuts. Because L-Tryptophan is the least abundant amino acid in our diet, the supplementation of L-Tryptophan has been widely used to correct deficiencies for more than a quarter of a century by doctors in the United States and Europe. Psychiatrists, medical doctors, and nutritionists, have long recognized the importance of pure L-Tryptophan for maintaining good heath.

Is L-Tryptophan safe as a dietary supplement?

L-Tryptophan was a very popular nutrient in the U.S. until recently, and was also used for premenstrual syndrome and mood swings. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) placed an Import Alert on this product in 1990 when one Japanese manufacturer sent several contaminated batches to the US. In 2001, the FDA loosened the restrictions on marketing. Our supplier has been thoroughly and independently tested and provides one of the purest L-Tryptophan products in the world today. Quality ingredients are an important component for success when one is anticipating quality results.

Recommended Supplementation

When L-Tryptophan is indicated, a common dosage is one 500 mg capsule for every 50 lbs of body weight at bedtime, or as directed by a healthcare professional. For a milder effect, take a lower dose. When indicated, allow sixty days for optimal results. With any new supplement, it is best to start with a low dose and work up to the desired dose gradually. Also, because several other amino acids may compete with L-Tryptophan for absorption, it is best taken with water or a snack containing minimal protein. Do not exceed six capsules (300 mg) per day unless directed by your doctor. It is always best to work with a health care professional.

Although some symptoms of an L-Tryptophan deficiency may disappear quickly, others may take time to show improvement. Essential amino acids are involved in a myriad of structural proteins and enzymes, as well as neurotransmitters, and so replacement may take time.

L-Tryptophan and Brain Function

As long as we can remember, medical researchers have insisted that when nerve cells die they are not replaced. But today, in laboratories around the world, this belief is being proven wrong, and we find that the brain, like every other organ in the body, can and does grow new cells. Of great interest to researchers is the hippocampus, the region of the brain that is associated with learning and memory loss. Researchers at Princeton University have focused on factors that can actually stimulate cell growth in the hippocampus region of the brain. Perhaps the most promising of these factors is the neurotransmitter serotonin, the natural metabolite of L-Tryptophan. Sunshine plays an important role in serotonin balance. When there is lack of sunshine, one's mood can be affected.
